Why a humanitarian shelter database?

Need

Humanitarian Sheltering is a key component to assist affected populations in rebuilding lives and livelihoods.

Document, Share, Save

The Open Shelter Database aims at creating a platform to collect and share with the widest possible audience, ranging from decision makers to field implementers, key information on humanitarian shelters, including the contacts of the organisations behind them

Everyone

Open source database made available to the contribution of Humanitarian Shelter actors. Implementing organisations with relevant experience are invited to openly share their shelter data to the benefit of all.

Global

Disasters hit parts of the globe with little or no predictability and their amount and consequences are alarmingly increasing year after year. See also the third party emergency events database.

Open

The shelter database is open and searchable for everyone. Users with Humanitarian.id accounts can also add shelters. For developers an API is available.

Cost effective

Sheltering is representing huge costs for agencies. Sharing open data on best practices may drastically reduce shelter solutions development costs.
